מחקרו מתמקד בפיתוח שיטות לרפואה מותאמת אישית, כאשר אחד מהכלים המרכזיים הוא השימוש בדגימות גידול טריות לבחינת טיפולים שונים במעבדה, טרם מתן הטיפול למטופל. שיטות אלו יאפשרו לחזות את הטיפול היעיל ביותר עבור המטופל, עוד לפני תחילתו. שיטות חדשניות אלו מתורגמות מהמעבדה לקליניקה באמצעות ניסויים קליניים המתמקדים בתשלובות טיפול חדשניות לטיפול בגידולים עמידים.

השכלת יסוד: בעל תארי DMD (דוקטור לרפואת שיניים), MD (דוקטור לרפואה) ו-PhD (דוקטורט) מהאוניברסיטה העברית בירושלים, והשלים את התמחותו בכירורגיית פה ולסתות במרכז הרפואי הדסה עין-כרם.

Dr. Shay Sharon is a board-certified attending surgeon and fellowship-trained cancer surgeon who uniquely combines the roles of a surgeon and a scientist. His mission is to bridge the gap between the lab and the operating room, translating scientific discoveries into personalized, effective treatments for patients with oral cancer.

Clinical Focus

Dr. Sharon specializes in the treatment of complex oral cavity conditions, including: 

• Oral & Maxillofacial Cancer Surgery: Performing advanced oncologic surgery and reconstruction for patients with oral and maxillofacial cancers.

• Difficult-to-Treat Cancers: Providing surgical options and multidisciplinary care for recurrent cancers or those that have not responded to standard therapies.

• Premalignant & Potentially Malignant Lesions: Expert diagnosis and management of oral pre-cancerous conditions (like dysplasia) and suspicious lesions to prevent their potential transformation into cancer.

Research: Designing Tomorrow's Treatments

As a principal investigator, Dr. Sharon’s research is dedicated to answering the most urgent questions in cancer treatment: Why do some tumors resist therapy, and how can we empower a patient's own immune system to fight their specific cancer?

His lab's work is focused on developing personalized medicine models. A key goal is to use fresh tumor samples to test various therapies in the lab, enabling doctors to predict the most effective treatment for a patient before it is administered.

This cutting-edge research is now being translated from the lab into the clinic through the design of pioneering clinical trials. Dr. Sharon is actively developing studies that investigate new treatment combinations, particularly those exploring how to pair immunotherapy with advanced "immunogenic radiation" to treat difficult-to-treat cancers, with the ultimate goal of improving surgical outcomes and patient survival.

Dr. Sharon’s dual expertise is the result of extensive and highly specialized training:

Clinical Fellowship: Head and Neck Surgical Oncology & Microvascular Reconstruction at Boston University Medical Center (Boston, MA, USA).

Research Fellowship: Head and Neck Cancer Immunology at the Providence Cancer Institute (Portland, OR, USA).

Foundation: He earned his DMD (Doctor of Dental Medicine), MD (Doctor of Medicine), and PhD from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and completed his residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Hadassah Medical Center.
